QuestionI would like to know how long approximately do African grey parrots live for? Also i have a two ear old African grey whose beak is cracked and broken on the end. I was wondering if this has anything to do with some kind of deficiency?
AnswerThe African Grey has been comfortably assisgned a 50 year lifespan, but over the past decade or so with so much more known about proper treatment, diet and care it's not surprising to find them reaching their mid to late 60's!
What you're likely seeing is a typical molt. The beak peels off and sheds with fresh/new beak underneath. It's not uncommon to see this happening year 'round, but moreso at the same times of year that the bird sheds many feathers.
To make sure he's eating right, check the 'bird' page at my site www.4AnimalCare.org
An overview is that he should be eating predominantly pellets with a quality seed supplement of about 20% of their diet.
Additionally, fresh fruit and vegetables are necessary every day (melons, oranges, papayas, mango, grapes, kale, dark lettuces, peas, kale, beets, beans) and nuts like almonds, cashews, brazil nuts, but limited peanuts and preferably no sunflower seeds.
Always have a fresh cuttlebone in his cage and mineral block.
Never add supplements to water, but some might be added to dry food as long as they eat it.

Let me know how you do.
