How to tame my 2 Sun Conures?

21 16:07:01

Question
I have 2 sun conures. They are totally bonded with each other. I had them for a year or so and never really trained them. They always follow each other, so 1 flew out the door (other room) the second one with out a flinch followed. I would like help to train them. One of them is kinda ok, as in her will sit on shoulder if I take him away from the other (another room). The second bird I tried to take to a different room and it took a while. I have to put on 2 right hand gloves to stop the biting. They hated being taken away from each other.

How should I start training them? Continue what I'm doing? What will happen if I put them in different cages and rooms?

Answer
Ok, with a bonded pair of birds it is going to be hard to train them with out separating them, however do NOT separate them. Parrots mate for life and they will not be happy if they are taken away from each other, to take them away because you want to handle them would be absolutely selfish and cruel. I believe in keeping bonded pairs together. When you adopt and or buy a parrot you are not just getting a pet, owning a parrot is a lifestyle.
Above all, training takes TIME, PATIENCE, and LOVE! There are no quick, easy fixes to solving behavior problems. Some behavior problems take months and even years to fix.
I have a bonded pair of Sun Conures and they some days, just don't want to be handled and that is fine, that is their choice. You birds need to have choices, whether they WANT to come out of the cage or not. Remember, you have their whole lives to work with them, and it is very common that one will be friendlier than the other because it will be protecting it's mate.
DO NOT continue to put on gloves, gloves scare birds and they will bite more. Another part of having a parrot is getting bitten. If you do not get used to this you will fear the beak and those birds will walk all over you.

First, I think you need to have both of their wings clipped so they don't fly all around the house while you are working with them, and you can let their flight feathers grow back out once they are better behaved.

I strongly believe in positive reinforcement training. You will need to be treating them when you interact with them. Let them know that you are a source of treats and good things. Eventually they will come around and continue to allow you to interact and may step up after a while. I adopted out a Blue front Amazon and it took him 1 full year to step up. He would fly to his owner but he was just not comfortable enough to step up.

You should never interact with a bird that is behind cage bars. What does that remind you of? Jail? You should only be interacting when your bird is out of the cage or on top of the cage.
