New babies

Question
My husband gave me two gerbils and he was told they were both males. Now we have six new babies.  I called the pet store they told me to take dad out then I read that I shouldn't do that and if I do not to put him back. I think they are four days old but that is how long he has been in another cage.  We also put the cages beside each other so they are still getting to see each other threw the bars. I hate him being away from his pups but I don't want to harm my babies. What should I do?  I was also told they mate the day the pups are born.  Is that ture?

Answer
They are able to mate the day the pups are born, and you should keep the father seperated from the mother and babies. Not only can he make her pregnant again, but he can potentially harm the babies. If you want to put him back in eventually, it will be safe to do so when the babies are around 2-3 weeks old.

Hope this helps!
