My Neices Mouse Is Sick Please Help

Question
My nieces' mouse has been scratching like crazy. The mouse now has a bunch of scabbed sores all over her body. Her diet has not been changed and there is no sign of a respitory problem. Also where the scabs are there is no hair. She continues to lose hair and get more scabs. Do you have any idea what this could be and how can i treat it withought paying a rediculous vet bill?

Answer
Thank you for your question.

Is she the only mouse in her cage with this problem? If so the scabs may be bites from the other mice and the hair loss could be due to stress. If this mouse is quite old then skin problems and hair loss are fairly normal.

The first thing I would do is to sprinkle athletes foot remedy (powder form) both on her and in the cage. Do so every day for about a week. If you see no improvement stop using the powder and massage oil of primrose on her skin and leave capsules in her cage for her to nibble on. Mice will enjoy licking this off each other which is psychologically beneficial. Neither are expensive and should clear up the problem.

You could take her to the vet but I have found that they don't have a great deal of knowledge on mice and the money could be wasted.

I hope she recovers soon, if you have any more questions please feel free top ask. Thank you
