Mouse wont let me pick her up

Question
I have a mouse thats roughly 7-8 months old.
I got her when she was very young possibly 5 weeks old and have held her constantly. But shes still not used to my hand going in her cage. Each time I go to pick her up she will either race to her wheel and start running on it or go in her hidey tin. Eitherwise she will run around hoping I dont catch her.

Is there anyway I can tame her? shes not easily bribed by food either shes really picky on what she eats and what she wont eat.

Answer
Dear Teyarna,

The best way to get a scared mouse out of the cage is to keep a toilet paper roll in the cage and coax her into it. Then put your hands on either side and pick it up. After that she will climb out if you place it on a surface; or she may climb onto your hand;or she may exit if you gently tilt it;  or if she is small enough and your hand is small enough, you may be able to reach in gently and take her out. But you definitely don't want to terrify a mouse by chasing it around with your hand in the cage.

I answered a question about taming a timid mouse just the other day. It does suggest you find a treat she likes. Bits of sunflower seeds? Buttered popcorn? It can also work without treats if you just put your hand in for a long time until it is completelybenign to her.

I think it is fine to have a mouse who needs a TP roll exit from the cage as long as she is completely tame outside of the cage.

Let me know how it goes!

Squeaks n giggles,
