Question
Hi, I am intrested in buying another pet but thought i'd go for something relitivly quite and low smell(rabbit pee and ferets stink lol) plus i am slighlty allergic to hay products and don't think hedgehogs need these typed products? I was wondering if a hedgehog makes a good pet? I am talking can I carry the hedgehog around like a guinea ig or hamster without it squriming to jump from my hands? Would it poop on me or are they not bad for that? Also do they have a smell to them and how offen should teh cage be cleaned to pervent any smells...what beding do you reccomend and should I have one or two? will these cirrters be scared from the noises my three lovebirds make or my dogs playing sounds? where should the cage be located? (I really wanted another puppy but thoguht better of it as my dogs high food and vet bills are quite enough as well they are very demanding of attention and time)thank you.

Answer
Hedgehog urine has a very strong odor, and the hedgehog tends to smell a little musky because of that. They also will poop and pee whenever the mood strikes them, and at times on you if they are frightened or just have to go. They need a wheel, and they often poop in the wheel and it will build up on their feet at times. They tend to roll up and huff more than try to jump, but I have one spirited little guy who will squirma if he wants to play.

Hedgehogs require time and annual vet visits. Hedgehogs also tend to be stressed easily by noise. They need a quite environment. They are happy to have a solitary environment, and two is not essential if you are able to give time.

With small animals, I prefer the paper pulp beeding. NO WOOD.

I really don't think a hedgehog is the right pet for you. Once the novelty wears off, you will probably find the hedgehog to be more burdensome than enjoyable.
