Question
Hi my female hedgie had a litter of 7 and i noticed she was infested with fleas because i couldent bath her for a few weeks, well i had to give her a bath because they were everywhere even on her eyes so i tried to wash her face to get rid of the  fleas and she deferentially breathed in some water because whenever she hisses i can sort of hear something in her nose that dosent sound normal, its a little faint but i can definenitly hear it, will she be ok or should i get her checked by the vet??? i just don't want her to end up with ammonia and i combed through all of her babies and picked all of the fleas off of them so there gone now, do you think she will be alight or will she need to see a vet and how much do you think the vet check up will cost if I have to take her???

Answer
Your hedgie needs to see a vet ASAP.  Respiratory illnesses in hedgehogs can progress rapidly and be fatal.  The mom and all the babies will also need to be treated for the bugs.  Mites are the most common insect parasites, and if your hedgies have those, the vet will need to prescribe meds.  Fleas you might be able to treat at home with flea shampoo for kittens/cats, but I would ask the vet about this while you are there. Fees will depend on where you live, if your hedgie needs tests or meds, etc. The base cost will likely range from $25 to $50.
