Question
QUESTION: Hi, I am thinking of getting a hedgehog, and i want to know if its the right pet for me, i don't want it to get fleas because i have heard its common for them to get it so how do i prevent it? And i will handle him every day also for hours, also i will care and love him a lot, but the one thing that worry's me is the flea part and if they are nice and will become tame? Is this the pet for me?

ANSWER: Carlos --  I have never had a problem with fleas in my 12 years of owning hedgehogs, although I am sure that being a warm blooded animal they are capable of having them.  I think your biggest problem would come from having other pets who brought the fleas into the home or from taking your hedgehog outside into an area where flea infested animals had been.  It is more common for hedgehogs to have a problem with mites, which can cause itching and quill loss.  Both problems can be treated with a topical medication usually used on dogs and cats called Revolution.  You would want to talk to your vet about using this treatment and the proper dosage.
Just like people, there are all different personalities of hedgehogs.  If a hedgehog has been bred by someone who makes breeding for good temperament a priority, it is likely to be friendly and to relax easily.  If this has not been a consideration, or if a hedgehog has not also been well socialized, they can be shy and difficult to handle.  If you are looking at a specific hedgehog assume that while it will become more calm with you in time, if it is rolled up in a tight ball making a clicking noise, it is always likely to be a more shy animal.  With time you may make huge progress in getting it to trust you, but there are no guarantees.  If an animal either doesn't raise it's quills at all, or only raises them briefly, then peeks out to see what is going on, this hedgehog is personable enough that it is going to make a good pet and be enjoyable to handle.  Feel free to ask if you have any other questions!

QUESTION: Thanks-you, Also where can i find a good bredder near Minnesota Or wisconsin or even south dakota?

Answer
Carlos -- I'm sorry, but I do not personally know any good breeders in that area.  When you do find someone make sure you ask questions about their animals, what they are hoping to accomplish in breeding, what kind of guarantees they offer on their animals, and what kind of after sale support is available.  Sorry I couldn't be of more help!
