Question
hello Ryan,
all i want to know is how to care for a prenant guinea pig who is way to young. we bought our last guinea pig at the age of 6 weeks and around another six weeks later she gave birth to 3 still born young and she died later on that day. i had suspitions that she was pregnant but i thought it was all normal so i left her alone but she ended up dying with all her young. now i have another guinea pig who i again think is pregnant. How can you be sure that they are pregnant without having to pay vet bills, and why did the last guinea pig die, how can i prevent the same thing happening from the guinea pig i have know. thankyou very much for your help. please reply as soon as possible. your sincerly

ps. our new guinea pig is only six weeks old

Answer
Hello Angelee and thanks for the question,

I am sorry to hear about your experiences with pregnant Guinea Pigs. It is hard to lose a pet.

As for "telling" if a GP IS pregnant, young GPs "show" very well. There will be hard distension in the abdominal area that you "may" be able to feel moving. The only other thing this can be is worms which are pretty rare in GPs.

6 weeks is WAY TOO YOUNG for a GP to have much chance of carrying viable offspring to term. There is very little that can be done to "help" the little GP out as well. If she has the babies and is ok afterwards, give her some milk soaked bread once or twice per day. This will help her with milk creation for the pups.

Good luck. I wish I had better news for you.
Sincerely,
Ryan
