Guinea pig wont eat hard food

Question
hey
i recently got a guinea pig and he has been adorable. at first i went to the pet shop and brought him some hard pellet food for guinea pigs. my guinea pig would happily eat this every time i fed him. but then i started to introduce to him some soft food e.g. carrots, lettuce as treats but now he wont eat the hard pellet food. even when i get a handful of the food in my hand and place it near his mouth, he will have one sniff of it then start purring and pushes my hand away.

I'm scared he will get really hungry so i now give him a large mixture of vegetables every time i feed him. is it normal for my guinea pig to deny the hard food? will he ever get back onto the hard food?

Answer
Hi Ian

It sounds like your pig has got into the habit of eating laziy. If you leave just the hard food in the bowel for just a few hours he should eat it.

If he still ignores the hard food when there is nothing else on offer, please consult your vet as there may be a teeth problem. If nothing is found to be wrong, you can change the brand of dry food.
