Question
Hello. My question is about breeding. I bred my hamster named Daisy in June when she was 7 months old with my male hamster named Pepper when he was 4 months old. She had 15 babies all of them got wet-tail and died. She and Pepper are VERY healthy hamsters. I don't know what went wrong. Anyway so it's been 4 months now since the birth. She is 10 months and Pepper is 6 months. Since she's older could I breed her again and shoot for a smaller litter? It was her 1st time to be a mom and my 1st experience. I really hope I can breed her again. E-mail me back!!!

Answer
Mother hams do need time to rest between litters, and are only to be bred twice in a lifetime. Since she never really got to rear her babies, and since females tend to get sterile past 12 months or so, the 3 months you waited should be enough time for you to try and breed her again. The older they get the smaller litters tend to become, but she may still end up with a large litter. I too have an expectant mother ham on my hands of 6 months old.
