swelling on throat

We have had our ferrets for several months now. They arrived in good health and great nature. Recently ( in the last 2 weeks), we noticed a small swelling on the side of males throat. At first it was only noticeable bytouch, but now is becoming visually noticeable. My question(s) to you is .. is this a condition that should be looked at by a vet, is it possibly contagious, is it dangerous, what is it, what can be done?

I do have a couple of questions first so I can better advise you on what it probably is.  Is the bump soft and squishy?  Is it pink in color?  If the answer to both of these questions is yes then it would indicate that it is a cyst and it would have to be removed by a ferret knowledgable vet.  Please contact me directly so the situation can be dealt with faster.
