Question
i have a 1yr old red nose pit. i would like to know what kind of food can i feed her. i've tried eukaunuba, bill jack (dry and frozen),wet canned foods. she eats it for a little bit and then she doesn't want it anymore. but she loves alpo canned foods, i dont like to give it to her because i dont think it has any nutrition in it. now i'm feeding her chicken and rice ( i boil chicken, cook some rice and then mix it together). she refuses to eat it sometimes but when she gets hungry enough the she eats it.and i dont think she weighs enough (58.8lbs). i want her to be thick and solid not thin and slender. please help!

Answer
I would not want to feed Alpo, either.  Eukanuba is so-so quality, and Bil Jac is poor quality, it contains corn, salt, sugar, and an unhealthy preservative.

Some good kibble brands are Wellness, Solid Gold, and Natural balance (available at Petco), and Blue Buffalo at Petsmart.  Wellness Core is a very good food and it is grain-free, high in protein, so it's good for weight gain.  The rice/chicken is only ok temporarily, it is not a complete diet, it lacks calcium and several other vitamins/minerals.

For canned food:
I would try to find some cans of green tripe.  A few companies make it.  Tripe is often a favorite among picky dogs, it is very smelly, but very healthy.
Another really good canned food is Merrick.  They make about 20 varieties and they are similar to homemade food.  Canned can be mixed with a kibble and a bit of hot water.

Another thing you can mix with kibble for taste is Keifer plain cultured milk, available in any grocery store near the yogurt.  A lot of dogs like dairy, you mix in just a little bit.

Since the dog is low weight, have you gotten a fecal test lately to check for worms?
