Male Yorkie marking territory

Question
I have a male yorkie that is about 1.5 years old.  For the most part he is house broken but he still "marks his territory.  Is there anyway to break him of this habit?

Answer
Laura,

Before I can answer this question I would need to know if he fixed and are there any females in the home?  I had seven females at one time living in the house with me and never kept a male because of the "marking his territory issue".  My son has a male Yorkie that is about the same age as yours and when he comes to visit he marks his territory even though he is fixed.

When he is at home my son says that he never marks his territory.  That being said you should know that Yorkies as a rule are one of the hardest breeds to house train.  From my experience they are never really house trained.  Having a female in the house with a male is going to cause them to mark their territory even if they are fixed.  Not having a female in the house does not guarantee they won't mark their territory because they are so hard to potty train.

The solution that my son and I have come up with is that when he comes to visit we put a doggie diaper on his male.  It is a bit of a hassle because you have to take it off when he goes outside and put it on when he comes back in but it solves the problem.

I'm sorry I don't have better news for you but in my experience there is no way to completely potty train a Yorkie.  Your best bet is to get a doggie diaper (which can be found at any pet store).

Sincerely,

Melinda
