Yorkie bump

Question
I have a 5 month old male yorkie that I was grooming tonight and found a small lump on the upper left side of his back. It is red no hair around the area. I think it just came up on him.

Answer
Jack,

I would say a bump like that would be normal if your Yorkie was around ten or twelve years old but I have never seen anything like that on a younger dog.  I am not a vet so I cannot state with any certainty what the bump is and without seeing it I cannot guess but if he were my dog I would wait a little before going to the vet.

If it just came up I would give it a week to disappear.  If however is grows or starts to look infected I would take him to the vet immediately.  Most dogs will show you if they are ill by not eating.  That is always the tell tale sign.  So if he is eating and drinking and just as playful as always I would not worry about it.  If however his personality changes or he stops being himself I would take him to the vet immediately.  You should also monitor the hair loss.  You stated that there was no hair around the ares, if that worsens you should take him to the vet immediately.

Small dogs are prone to having little bumps here and there but in my experience this does not usually occur until they are older.

Sincerely,

Melinda
