Yorkshire Terrier pregnancy???

Question
Hi!
This is my 1st time breeding my 5.6 lb. Yorkie female.  She was 21 months old when bred with a 4.6 lb. Yorkie male that was 10 months old.  They were mated and tied together for 4 days in a row for 15-25 minutes each time - with the 1st day being October 23, 2007.  The changes I have seen in her don't seem that dramatic to this day - but this is my first attempt at breeding.  Her aggressive attitude has been the biggest change and she sleeps a lot more. She initially ate quite a bit more than usual for her and she did seem to have some morning sickness and throwing up - but that was only for a short time.  She seems to be a bit heavier, have a slightly rounded tummy, and her rib cage and abdomen seem to be rather tight and full.  Her nipples have always been very tiny and almost flat, but now they do seem to be a little bit bigger and stand up more.  I am forever looking at her and gently rubbing her tummy so I don't know if I can tell everything or not.  She is very clingy with me - moreso than is usual for her.  Does this sound like where she should be at for this time in a pregnancy? I would greatly appreciate any and all information you can share with me.
Thank you so much for your time and help.
Cindy

Answer
Cindy,

The gestation period for a dog is nine weeks.  So if they tied on October 23rd your female would be due around Christmas Day.  The female usually starts to show when they are about three weeks away from their due date.  However, if she is only carrying one puppy she may not show at all.  Most females pee pee swells when they are in heat and if they are pregnant they will swell to almost five times the normal size.  The swollen pee pee is usually the best indication that they are pregnant.  If your females pee pee is swollen then she is probably pregnant.  When you are about two weeks away from delivery you should be able to detect movement but again if she only has one puppy you may not be able to detect it.  Because you got a good tie more than once I would say that the odds are in your favor that she is pregnant.  You will need to have a vet lined up in case she has trouble delivering the puppies and you have to take her to the vet for an emergency c-section.  Make sure your vet can be reached at any time of the day or night in the event you need him.  Good Luck!

Sincerely,

Melinda
