Breed my Yorkie

Question
Hello Melinda,

I have a 6 years old purebred male yorkie, he has excellent health and his weight has always been 5 pound until recently when he gained a pound!
I would like for him to have a female playmate by offering his services (stud service!) in exchange of a/the female of the litter instead of paying for one. Now, he doesn't have any experience with female expect that I know he loves them and I have also caught him humping a few times throughout the 6 years.
Now, does it sound like a fair deal?
What should I do?
Should I close the deal by Notary to make it legal in case of..?
What are some of the things or questions i should ask the owner of the bitch?

Thank you in advance,
Juma

Answer
Juma,

At six pounds you are going to have a hard time finding someone who will want to breed with your male.  When breeding yorkies a female must be bred to a male that is much smaller than she is.  You would have to find a female that is over 6 pounds and a breeder who was willing to breed with a large male.  Most breeders who have a 6 pound female will breed them with a 2.5 to 3 pound male.  There are many reasons for this but I think you get the idea.

I know this is not what you wanted to hear but I believe that telling you the facts is better than leading you on.  Your best bet is going to be buying a playmate for your little boy rather than breeding to get one.  You should also know that if you get two males they will probably fight so that is not a good idea.  If you get a female you will need to get your male fixed so she cannot get pregnant and to keep him from marking his territory all over your house.  He will still mark his territory but it will be drastically reduced if he is fixed.
