Breeding my male Yorkie

Question
QUESTION: Hello!  My male yorkie is almost 10 years old, humping everything stuffed animal in the house, marking his territory on every blade of grass in the yard, etc.  I want to stud him out, but have no idea how old he should be before I do.  Sometimes I think I need to find him a girlfriend, QUICK, before he starts humping other objects.  How old should he be?
Happy New Year!

ANSWER: Angie,

Technically you could still breed him but I doubt that you would find a breeder that would want to breed with a ten year old yorkie.  Dogs are a lot like people and the sperm count for a ten year old dog would probably not be very good.  You should consider having him fixed as that would decrease the humping and territory marking drastically.  It is also proven that if they are fixed they can live longer because they are not susceptible to as many diseases.

QUESTION: Have mercy...I feel ridiculous.  I meant he is 10 months old.  I obviously didn't read what I wrote carefully.  Thank you for your quick response!

Answer
Angie,

Don't feel ridiculous, I am supposed to proof everything before I post it but sometimes I don't and I make mistakes too.

You should not begin breeding him until he is at least one year old.  I know it will be difficult but you need to stop him from humping if at all possible.  You should not scold him for humping but do something to distract him.  The reason for this is that if a stud is allowed to hump whenever he wants he becomes used to humping a few times and then stopping.  This will carry over to his breeding practices and what you will get is a stud that will not complete the breeding process and essentially he will be ruined as a stud.

I found out the hard way.  I had a stud that a friend of mine kept and at first he was great at breeding.  Then all of a sudden he would mount the female and hump a few times and then stop.  I couldn't figure this out until I questioned my friend and I found out that she was letting him hump anything he wanted anytime he wanted.  I was never able to use him as a stud again.

You didn't ask but I should tell you that the size of your stud is going to matter when you are looking for someone to use him as a stud.  The female to male standard for breeding is a 5 pound female to a 2.5 to 3 pound male.  The female must always be bred with a male that is smaller than she is in order to produce the desired size puppies and to protect the female from complications during birth.

If your male is over 5 pounds you are going to have a very hard time studding him out.  If he is 2.5 pounds you can make a lot of money because he will be in high demand.

If he is too large to stud out then you should consider having him fixed because as I stated before it will help him live longer and prevent some diseases.
