Question
hello, I just got a male yorkie, he was born 8th dec 07, & as his mother had complications & died so he was hand reared from 2wks old.  I have been provided with some baby porridge & food & evaporated milk from the lady i got him from & he is fed 3 times a day, however I have had dogs b4 & have never had one so young, I would really appreciate some expert advise on how to care for him for the best. I think he would be better on puppy formula instead, can you help?  kind regards

Answer
Samantha,

Your baby should remain on the porridge for about another week.  Then you can start to introduce puppy food into his diet.  At eight weeks the mother usually has weaned the puppies so you can stop giving him the evaporated milk at eight weeks as well.  When you introduce the puppy chow you should heat water till it is very hot and put some in the bowl with the puppy chow.  Allow it to soak up and then mash it till it is soft.  Continue to do this and gradually taper off the water till he is on hard food.  You can offer the hard food along with the mashed and he will let you know when he is ready to go to the hard food.
