Female Yorkie in heat.

Question
Hello I have a couple of questions. First off I have a 1 1/2 year old 4lb. Yorkie in heat. She has been bleeding for 5 days. Today I but her and my friends 2 1/2 or 3lb 2 year old male yorkie together to see if she was ready to mate. She was letting him try but he is a little shorter then her and it never looked like he was connecting with her.So we tried to get him a platform to stand on but he still wasn't reaching. He has never been used as a stud before so could his thing not be long enough or is she just not ready to mate? Thank you and have a great day!

Answer
Shannon,

They usually are not ready to be bred when they are still bleeding bright red blood.  It is usually not until the bleeding turns to a pinkish color that they can successfully be bred.  They may try before that but the female cannot get pregnant.

As far as the male there are a lot of different reasons that he could be having difficulty but I can assure you his "thing" being to short is not the problem.

People always assume that because it is a dog that it will automatically know what to do and be able to do it.  That is simply not true in all cases.  You and your friend may have to preform some calisthenics in order to get them bred.  One of you will have to hold the female still and straight while the other will have to lie on the floor so you can see under the male and with a flat hand press his penis up towards the females vagina.  This will put him in the right direction and hopefully he will penetrate and then  complete the action until they become tied.

I must caution you to not let him go around humping whenever he wants to because that will cause him to become lazy and learn that after a few humps he is satisfied.  This can ruin a stud and they will never be good at breeding again.  Only allow him to hump the female when she is showing a pinkish discharge and then only for 30 minutes or less at a time.

You didn't mention what kind of platform you gave him to stand on but what it needs to be is a towel or something similar so that he can dig his back feet in enough to allow him to thrust upward.  A folded towel will usually work best.

If you would like a word document that I have provided to others that gives detailed information on the breeding through birth process please go to my website at www.petremembrances.com/Yorkie%20Advise.html.  You can cut and paste the url into your browser if it does not work directly from the All Experts site.

Good Luck and I hope you will be successful.
