I was told you might have to help the male if he is smaller 3-4 lbs female 10lbs. Is this true?

Your information is correct.  I would suggest giving them a chance to do it on their own but be ready to assist your male if they get tied.  The female being so much larger than him is liable to drag him around by his penis which could harm him and definitely hurts him.  If she does start to drag him you need to hold her still until the tie releases itself.
