Question
I have a male 3 year old yorkie who has been like a child to us.I also have a 19 month old little girl and I came up with the bright idea to get her a puppy,so yesterday I bought a 9 week old male yorkie and the baby loves it,but my problem is the 3 year old yorkie is losing his mind growling, showing teeth doesn't want anything to do with the puppy and of course the puppy keep following him around and I think he even kind of bit the puppy. We are crate training the puppy and trying to give the 3 year old as much attention as possible. Will my 3 year old yorkie get used to him, please help me. Thanks Danny

Answer
Danny,

I'm afraid you have a problem.  First of all it is not a good idea to have two males living in the same household.  Two females together or a male and a female are fine but with two males you are going to have problems.  Even if you get them neutered males are territorial and you cannot keep them from fighting.  I cannot stress enough that you need to keep the puppy away from the three year old because he could kill the puppy.

Normally when a new puppy is brought into a home with an adult already in the home there will be some growling, showing of teeth etc. but there is no biting.  The reason for the growling and showing of teeth is that the older dog is teaching the younger dog who is boss and who is in charge.  It is called the pecking order and the new puppy must learn his boundaries.  While there is a remote chance that this is what is happening it is possible.  However, that can change when they get older and usually does.  Of course there are exceptions to every rule and there are probably people out there who have two males together who do not fight but that is the exception.

I don't want to be rude but I question your judgement in getting a yorkie puppy for a 19 month old child.  I could see a lab or something large that she probably couldn't hurt but she could easily kill the puppy accidentally because they are so small.  While the puppy is still small and you have the ability to give him back to the breeder I strongly suggest that you do so.  Perhaps the breeder has a female that you could trade her for your male.  I don't know what else to suggest.
