Question
QUESTION: Dear Melinda,
I have ask you questions before and you have been very helpful. My female yorkie is pregnant and due in 10-14 days. She seems to be excreting some type of creamy white mucus like liquid. Is this normal? What could this mean? Thank you Geralyn

ANSWER: Geralyn,

Usually when they are about to give birth they will secrete a mucus plug.  The gestation period is 9 weeks,is it possible that you have counted the dates wrong? If you have calculated the gestation period correctly then you may want to call your veterinarian and ask if you should bring her in to be checked out.

QUESTION: Dear Melinda,
I did bring her to be checked by the Vet. She is fine. No signs of labor. She is having two. The Vet did say other was plenty of room for the heads to pass. So I should have two more beautiful Yorkies to add to my family. Don't know how I'll afford it with all their grooming and immunizations.Although I will think twice if I have any  males. I read what you said about your sons Yorkie marking his territory in your home. My male did the same thing at my moms house. Do you think this behavior might change since he was fixed?  Thanks again

ANSWER: Geralyn,

No, I do not think it will change.  My sons Yorkie has been fixed for over a year and he still does it.  My female never pees in the house but when the male comes to visit they both do.  Another thing to keep in mind is that the male marks his territory often and therefore, there isn't much pee that comes out.  This makes it difficult to see the pee spots unless you are really looking for them.  So he is probably peeing a lot more than you know.

Good luck with your babies.

QUESTION: Dear Melinda,
He doesn't mark in my house. Why would he at my moms? My mom was suppose to watch them while we were away for the weekend. She said, she watched him lift his leg on a plant, the secretary, and another piece of furniture. She was shocked and brought the dogs back home and we had to have neighbors come to let them out. I was kind of hoping it would disappear once he was fixed. Thanks for your advice. Geralyn

Answer
Geralyn,

Since your male has lived with you for a while he has already marked his territory in your house.  When he went to your mothers he had to mark his territory there because it was a different place than home.  As I said previously, just because you don't see him marking his territory at home doesn't mean that he isn't doing it.  Your mother was probably watching him all the time and that is why she observed him doing that.

I suspect that since this happened once if you take him to your moms again she will be extra vigilant watching him and you will have the same result.
