Question
I have a 6lb 4 oz chorkie female she is 10 mos old. She tied with the neighbors dog on the 12th day of her heat cycle. I am afraid because he is 6lbs 10 ozs. This is her first heat cycle. What should I do?

Answer
Chris,

You have a couple of choices and which one you choose will depend on what your plans are for the future.  If you do not plan on breeding your female then you should probably get her fixed. The fact that she is ten months old and that this is her first heat makes it a bad idea for her to have puppies.  The puppies can be aborted at this stage but unfortunately to do that she must be fixed.

If you planned on breeding her then you will just have to roll the dice and hope everything works out.  It is very hard on them to have puppies before they are fully mature which is usually after they are a year old.  Because he is larger than her she may have puppies that are too large to have and then a c-section would be necessary.  Having a c-section before the age of one is also very hard on them.

It's a tuff choice but only you can make it.

Good Luck
