Question
I have a male Yorkie who is very large for his breed, he is around 13 lbs. If he were to breed with another Yorkie she would have to be about the same weight right? But I think it would be hard to find the right girl for him. Once Yorkies are as large as he is would a 8 pound female be sufficient or would she need to be about 13.

Answer
Danielle,

You should definitely NOT breed your eight pound female with your 13 pound male.  Large breed dogs are different than small breed dogs.  If a 40 pound female was bred to a 50 pound male then it would not be a big issue.  However, the smaller the breed the more risks there are for complications.  Of course you could breed the two dogs and you might (I stress might) not have a problem, but if you love your dog you will not take that chance.

I'm afraid your "big boy" may have to become celibate.  Most breeders are going to be breeding females that are around 5 to 6 pounds and they will want to breed with a male that is 2.5 to 3 pounds in order to get the smallest yorkie possible.  The smaller they are the better they sell and the more you can get for them.

I doubt that you will be able to find anyone who wants to breed with a male as large as yours but don't let that disappoint you to much.  I had a female once that was 13 pounds and I wouldn't have traded her for the world.  She was the sweetest Yorkie I ever had.  So give your big boy a big squish and tell him its ok if he doesn't get to breed, cause you love him anyway.
