MVD in yorkie puppy

Question
I put a deposit on a puppy, 15 weeks old.  Breeder had her tested yesterday and she has MVD.  He dad has it also.  He is 7 and asymptomatic.  Should I still purchase her?  I just went through renal disease with a 7yr old and it did not turn out well.  We had to put him to sleep.  I don't think I could do it again.  What do you think?

Answer
Gretch,

I think in your heart you already know the answer to this question or you would not have asked.  I know you had your heart set on getting this puppy but you absolutely do not want to purchase a puppy that you know will have health problems.

The fact that the father has it and is asymptomatic does not mean the puppy will also be asymptomatic. I would have serious doubts about purchasing a puppy from a breeder that knowingly breeds a dog that has a genetic defect.  Whether it is greed or ignorance on the part of the breeder, they are irresponsible for breeding this male.  The male that she is using should not be used for breeding under any circumstances because doing so only perpetuates the genetic defect.

Get your money back and steer clear of this breeder.  There are plenty of reputable breeders out there that care enough, and know enough not to breed a dog with a genetic defect.
