Answer
Lydia,

You absolutely cannot breed a five pound male with a three pound female.  A three pound female is too small to breed at all, let alone with a male that is bigger than she is.  It is not recommended that a female smaller than 5 pounds be bred.  Some will breed a four pound female but only if the male they are breeding with is 2.5 pounds.  The normal rule of thumb is to breed a 2.5 to 3 pound male with a five to six pound female.  The reasons that you cannot breed a female with a male that is larger than she is are because the risk of complications is very high and you could loose the puppies and the mother.  Even if you were able to fatten up your female to five pounds she would still be too small to breed with a five pound male.

The ears can sometimes be taped to make them stand up but it will depend on how long they have been down.  If the ears don't stand up on their own I will usually recommend that you scotch tape them by pinching the outside edges together about half way up the ear.  Leave the tape in for about three or four days and then take it off.  If the ears stay up great, if not try taping again and repeating the whole cycle over again until they do stay up.  If however, after two weeks of trying they will not stay up then they are probably never going to stay up.

Lydia if you want to have a litter of puppies you would be wise to get another Yorkie to use for breeding.  Your baby is too small to breed and I am sure you don't want to loose her.  You also better get her fixed before she comes into heat.  Just because she shouldn't get pregnant doesn't mean that she can't get pregnant.  If your male and female accidentally mated it could be disastrous.
