Question
It's me again! I have another questin referring to Daisy.  She just takes off! She gets out of her leash or collar, or if you go outside real quick and the door doesnt close quick enough she takes off! Right on the main road! Several times she almost got hit!  When you call for her and find her she thinks your playing and keeps running!! Any tips would be helpful!

Answer
Ashley,

I have two words for you....shock collar.  I know its horrible and I know they carry a stigma of being cruel and abusive but if used properly they can save your dogs life.  As you stated, she almost got hit several times.  The next time you may not be so lucky.  Having your baby die is horrible enough but having to go and pick up whats left of her on the road is a horror I know you do not want to experience.

I have a shock collar that I use for all my dogs (including my Australian Shepherd) when their behavior gets out of control and the safety of the other dogs or their own is in jeopardy.  I have found that it is an effective tool in teaching your dog what is acceptable behavior and what is not.

I also believe that as with anything, it can be used with minimal pain and maximum results if used properly.  The first thing I did when I got mine was shock myself.  I felt it was only fair that I should experience what I was about to do to my dog.  It didn't hurt but it did literally shock me.  I have only had to use it once in a while since I first got it.  My Australian Shepherd was constantly barking at nothing in general which sent the Yorkies into a frenzy.  We were beginning to think that we would never have any peace until I got the collar.  I only had to shock her with it twice and the barking has stopped.  Now if she reverts back to barking again all I have to do is get the collar and put it on her.  She quits barking and doesn't have to wear the collar again for a while.

Make sure you get one that is remote control and not a bark collar.  The remote control gives you the ability to determine if they get a shock or not.  Mine has two buttons, a green one that emits a good dog sound and a red one that emits the bad dog sound for 5 seconds and then the shock.  After the initial two shocks I have never had to shock her again I just put the collar on and press the red, bad dog button.  It emits the sound associated with the shock and she stops so I stop pressing the button and she doesn't get shocked.

I urge you to get one.  It is the only way I know of to stop that kind of behavior and keep her from getting killed.  You'll be amazed at how well she listens to the word no after you have used the collar.
