Question
My yorkie girl is 5yrs old, her weight 5.5pound. She is recently on heat and I would like to breed her again. I bred her twice(used the same stud and both time mated her between the 11th-14th day ), but every time she only got one pup. This time i Found another stud dog, the breed told me that she will mate my girl with her stud between 9th-11th day(the breeder has not seen my girl before, we just commuicate by phone). Is this too early for mating my girl? should I trust this breeder? Will my yorkie girl likely to get only one pup this time as well?

Answer
Vinnie,

The time they can get pregnant is between day 7 and day 13 of the heat cycle.  The breeder has suggested breeding her between day 9 and 11 because that is right in the middle and is more likely to produce a litter of puppies than any other time.  A lot depends on the stud and how many times you breed them when it comes to how many puppies they will have.  If you only breed them once you may end up with only one puppy again.  If you are paying a stud fee and not offering the breeder pick of the litter then you have the right to breed with the stud as often as you like during her heat cycle.  If the breeder will only let you breed between day 9 and 11 then they are probably trying not to deplete the studs sperm so they can use him on another dog during the same time period.

If that is the case then it would be in your best interest to find a breeder who will allow you to breed between day 7 and 13.  You must appear to be confident and like you know what you are doing.  So be firm.  Tell the breeder that you want to breed between day 7 and 13 and that the process should be breed a day then skip one then breed a day etc. until the 13th day.  Often times people are treated exactly how well or how badly they allow themselves to be treated.  If you appear to be confident and knowledgable then you will be treated as such.  I think you get what I am trying to say.  It is your money and breeding is a business, you are the customer so you deserve to be satisfied with your purchase.

If the breeder will not comply ask her why and then try to assertain if the explaination she gives you is reasonable.  If not then you may have to breed with this stud this time but I would look for another breeder that is more reasonable so that when you female comes into heat again you will be prepared.  Also, keep in mind that you should not breed her every time she comes into heat.  It is acceptable to breed her two times and then skip a heat or breed her every other heat, but not every heat.
