Buying a 2yr old Yorkie

Question
Hi, I am about to buy my 10 month old girl purebred Yorkshire terrier a mate, a 2 yr old purebred yorkshire terrier. The seller is saying that he is a Champion breed. But when I asked for the papers, he said the papers are not included ( and if I want it, it will cost me another $300) and that he could only give me a copy. Is the AKC copy acceptable when I want to prove that their future puppies ( if they will have any later) are purebred? Also, why wouldn't the breeder give me the original papers? Could he turn back later and take the dog back from me using those AKC registration papers? Please advise

Answer
Susan,

Run as fast as you can in the opposite direction because this guy is not legit.  There is no way you can breed him and register the puppies with the AKC without having the papers.  When you purchase a dog you are given the papers and the dogs info is transferred to the new owners (that would be you).  This not only makes the dog yours by law but it enables you to breed him and then register litters he has sired with the AKC.  If you are planning on using him as a stud then people are going to want to have the purebred papers that come with purebred puppies.  I would suspect that if he is unwilling to give you papers then there is something amiss.  The male could be stolen, not the actual father of the litter, unregistered or any number of things none of them good.

I don't know how much you are paying for him so I don't know if the breeders request for additional money is reasonable.  Sometimes a puppy will be sold without papers even though it is purebred because the breeder does not want you to use the dog for breeding.  In these instances the breeders will sometimes charge more for a puppy with papers than one without even if they are both purebred.  However, his telling you he would only give you a copy is rediculous because you cannot submit a copy to the AKC when you are registering a dog and you certainly would not be recorded as the actual owner of the dog.  He could come back at you in the future and claim the dog is his and take it from you.

If it were me I would find another dog and another breeder because this guy is up to something no good.  If he is willing to deceive you about the papers I would have to wonder what else he is hiding.
