Diapering as a form of birth control

Question
I was reading you response to the question on weather to breed on first heat or not, and it said to keep male and female seperate.  Is it possible to diaper the female so
she won't get preggers the first heat.  I think they will miss each other terribly.  Thank you for your help, you seem so very knowledgable on Yorkies.

I'm really sorry but I would not feel right if I said that it was ok.  First, dogs will find a way around almost any obstacle in order to breed.  Technically you could use the diaper method and feel relatively safe as long as they were within your eye site at all times.  Your male is going to want to mount your female regardless of the diaper and that brings up a secondary problem.

If you plan on using him as a stud in the future, allowing him to hump her at random could potentially ruin him as a stud.  What happens is that he will become used to humping and not "completing" what he started which is penetration and ejaculation.  So basically he will learn that he can get satisfied without having to complete what he started.  So when the time comes for him to actually mate with the female he will most likely never get to the frenzied point where he enters her and gets stuck.

When this happens the male is ruined as a stud because you can never get him to complete what he started.  Unfortunately, once they learn this behavior it cannot be untaught.  Now you may think that you can just tell him no and make him stop but this also has potential risks.  When it comes time to breed him you may not be able to get him to do it because he thinks if he does he is going to get scolded or told no.  Since most dogs want to please their masters, and he has been scolded or told no before he will not understand that now it is ok.

I know it is a real dilemma and that keeping them apart is really not the ideal situation but sometimes you have to look at the big picture.  Keeping them separated for three weeks is a big hassle but keep in mind that it will be well worth it in the long run.  Also keep in mind that you will only have to do this once.  After this heat they can go at it as much as they want to as long as he is not allowed to randomly hump her without consummating.

If it makes you feel any better look at it as though you are saving them from having a very frustrating three weeks.
