over due Yorkie?

Question
I have been breeding Toy Poodles for about 9 years. Last year I got a wild hair and bought a Yorkie. She is the funniest, most entertaining dog I have ever owned. I planned on breeding her from the beginning and kept a good eye on her to come in heat and wasn't going to breed her until next spring. Well I never once saw my little 4 lb. champion poodle interested in her so I was unaware that she was pregnant until about the first part of September. She got big fast and is continuing to grow each day. By the size of her compared to my Poodles when they are pregnant, she is ginormous. Her puppies first showed up on X-rays fourteen days ago. and she is still pregnant. I am under the understanding puppies usually don't show up until about ten days before they are due. That would have put her having them about 4 days ago. She has positive 4 puppies and probably 5. She is the biggest pregnant dog I have ever seen. My question is. Is it likely for her to go very far over the 63 day gestation period. Every dog I have ever bred, which includes three different breeds, has never gone over. A few have came a day or two earlier than I planned but never over. I am kind of worried about her. Although she is acting normal I just keep worrying that she is not going into labor and she should have by now. She has been have contractions for a few days but no pushing what so ever. Is there any thing to worry about?

Answer
Kathy,

Since you did not see them mate there is really no way to tell which day she actually got pregnant.  Therefore, it is possible that she is not yet overdue.  All of the dogs I have bred have also been right on time with their deliveries.  It is unusual for a Yorkie to have so many puppies which is probably why she looks so big.  My concern would be that she is too small to have so many puppies (especially if they are large) and you could have complications.  I would call the vet and see if he can preform a c-section on her just to make sure that everything goes smoothly.  If you vet is unwilling to do this then you need a medical opinion as to the possible reasons that she seems to be having contractions but is not delivering the puppies.  Yorkies are not like other dogs.  The incidents of complications during pregnancy and the birth are much higher than other dogs.  I would feel much better if I knew that you were working closely with your vet to make sure that everything goes smoothly especially since she is so young and inexperienced.
