Question
Hello, I purchased my yorkie when she was 12 weeks old. She was first all black with the tan face but now over the months she has turned all gray. Why the heck is that? Is she a pure breed? Do yorkies ever turn gray or was I screwed over? Thanks in advance

Answer
Danielle,

I don't think you have been "screwed over".  All Yorkies are born black and tan and they don't turn the color they are going to be until they are almost a year old.  It depends greatly what the lineage is if you are going to determine a color.  The AKC and the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America both have standards (rules) that state what the "official" colors should be.  If you want to know the official standards you can visit their websites.

Keep in mind though that very few dogs fall under the official guidelines these days.  Since it has become so easy for anyone to become a breeder most breeds are no longer actually pure.  I have had females that were mostly silver and they were beautiful.  So if you have papers that state she is a Yorkshire Terrier, then she is.  The silver color of her hair is not uncommon.  I meant to ask, did you see both of her parents?  They usually have a large determining factor in the size, color and temperament of the puppies.  Did either of them have silver hair?
