Question
My yorkie is pregnant..Is there anything specific we need to give her during pregnancy..like prenatal vitamins for dogs or certain foods..thank you very much

Answer
Hi Melissa,
When I plan on breeding one of my girls, I make sure they are on a very good quality diet first of all. If your female is on a good diet and your vet said she was healthy and there was no reason not to breed her, then she should be fine. I do supplement my females in the last 2-3 weeks of pregnancy up until after the puppies are weaned, with a vitamin (Pet-tabs, Nu-vet or any good vitamin) and calcium tablets to prevent eclampsia or calcium deficiency.
I have a female now who had 9 puppies a week ago, that is a HUGE huge litter for a 7 lb. female, she is on double the calcium and vitamins, my vet told me to do this since an average litter is 3 puppies, she and her puppies are doing well. I also gave 3 of her puppies to another female to nurse, this other female had 1 puppy so she took over some of the burden of nursing the babies. I think this may be a record litter!
