Question
Is it possible for a dog to have more than one father per litter? For example....my dog and its brothers and sisters be born on the same day but have totally different fathers than each other.

Answer
hello rosa,

contrary to popular belief it is possible for a litter to have more than one father. However one pup will not have 2 fathers, but the litter may be split. Meaning half the pups maybe from one father and the other half, from another.

To clarify this, say your female dog is in heat. So one dog breeds with her, and then on her way home another dog breeds with her. If both the dogs release sperm into her than there is a chance of 2 different fathers. And mind you this is possible because there are about 5-10 days where a female will breed with any dog, when she is in heat. But the pups will be divided in half. One half of the pups will belong to one dog, and the other half to another dog.

I also have a first hand example of this. I own a Labrador retriever. HE was bred to a black lab. So 2 times she stood for him and they locked. However the owner of the female also owned a brittany spaniel. The brittany spaniel also bred with the female and they locked as well. And when  the pups were born, guess what? 3pure yellows, 2 pure blacks. Then the other 5 were black with white chest and feet, and others were black with tan, and tips of tails white.

I hope this is convincing enough, however if this doesnt convince you. You can ask again and i will give you legitimate sites where you can find this info from.
