Question
HI I HAVE MALTESE HALF SHIT-ZU.  DAISY IS 3 YEARS OLD.  LAST WEEK SHE STARTED HAVING DIARREHA PROBLEMS.  WE STOP GIVING HER REGULAR FOOD, AND KNOW WE HAVE EAING RICE. WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO SPEED UP THIS DIARREHEA PROBLEN

Answer
I am so sorry to hear about your problems with your maltese. I appologize about not answering your messege in a timely manner, I have been out of the state and just returned.

My maltese has had a similar problem. I must warn you that you must try your best to avoid dehydration and hypoglycemia. The best advice I can give you that helped my dog survive is ice ice ice chips. I also gave him Pedia Lite Pops (they are for humans, but the vet gave them to the dog, and it worked) Look in the babie isle or the medicine isle. They are also in drug stores. Originally the vet gave the dog electrolyte IV's but when I got home he suggested the freezer pops that are flavored, for the dog to regain electrolytes lost during diarehha.
Also to avoid hypoglycemia(low blood sugar) Give your Daisy some NutriCal (obtain from a vet) to stabilize the dogs lost vitamins and minerals, and energy. Use sparingly though, and definately not everyday.

I also cut out all snacks that could be the cause of the diarrehha. The cause was pancreatitus, caused by excessive Beggin strips. I am not saying that your dog has excessive snacks in no way, I am just providing an answer. Other possibilities could be a parasite, virus, doggy stomach flu, or blockage.  If your dog uses greenies, I strongly suggest that you stop them immediately since they have contributed to the blockage death of many dogs in the past.

Take your dog to the vet if the poop continues form more than four days in a row. I also reccommend adding some chicken or bland protein to the dogs rice. Rice is an excellent bland food for your dog to have, but could be too soft for her and contribute to more poop. You may have to buy special ID prescription food for your dog if the problem continues.

I wish you best of luck. Again I am so sorry I could not respond earlier. If you still need more suggestions, I will try to think of some more ideas.
