Puppy and Cat Meeting each other

Question
Hi! We have a 10 week old Siberian Husky Pup named Storm.  We've had him only 5 days. He is very good and energetic.  However he is very interseted in our 6 year old cat.  Storm chases him and nips on his tale when he is able to get close enough.  The cat runs away.  I really like my cat alot and want to make this transition as easy as possible for him.  Any suggestions on helping my two pets to get along?

Thanks!
Bob

Answer
Hi Bob - thanks for writing.  Congratulations on your new puppy.  Storm sounds like a typical siberian handfull.  He's only playing with the cat and doesn't mean any harm.  Siberians love to run and will chase anything that moves.  One suggestion is to have Storm on lead or in a harness when the two are together.  That way when he goes for the cat you can give the lead a jerk (just a small one, enough to get his attention.  Remember, he's just a baby and you don't want to hurt him or make him afraid of the lead).  Your best bet is to wait it out.  As your cat gets more used to Storm, he will be less afraid and more defensive toward the puppy.  One scratch on the nose and the problem will correct itself.  I wish I had a better answer for you, but they have to establish their own pecking order.  Have a wonderful holiday and give Storm a tummy scratch for me.
