Husky hair growth pattern

Question
Beverly,
When do Husky males usually get their full coat?
I have an 8 and a half month old Husky. He is almost at the average Husky weight now. He is around 45 lbs. and I expect he will peek at a little over 50 lbs.  However, he still looks a bit lanky because his coat is not as full as any full grown Husky that I have seen. Is it possible that his coat will not be very full? He is AKC registered in case you are wondering.

Thank You,
Jarrod Schmidt & Kane(thats the pup)

Answer
Hello Jarrod!  Thank you for writing and congratulations on your new puppy.  He's a little young yet.  See what he looks like this time next year.  This is also the time of year when they are 'out of coat'or losing their winter coat.  What's the climate like where you are?  It's the thick undercoat that makes them look so soft and thick.  The outer guard hairs are coarse and thin, making him look lanky.  Keep in mind that he's a teenager right now, probably all legs and ears.  It will all even out when he matures.

Coats vary just like ear set, eye color and how the tail is carried.  Did you see the parents?  If their coats looked OK then I wouldn't worry about Kane.  He'll make a big boy that you'll be proud to show off.

Good luck and keep in touch - Beverly
