Question
Greetings Katie,

Thank you in advance for your time.  I have a 4.5 year old spayed golden named Kelty.  Ever since I got her at 4 months, we have hiked and camped together.  This seems to be an especially hot summer, and I have some concerns about it.  WHat are some of the danger signs I should look for with regard to heat exaustion and dehydration?  How far can I push her when hiking in the heat, etc.  How long does it take for them to "catch up" with water and cooling down?  Does a swim help as much as I would think to cool her off?  My largest worry is simply being unfamiliar with any danger signs, as I am most conscientious with her health.  Thank you for any insight that you can offer.

Answer
Because you have been doing this all along, I'm sure you'll be fine.  But here are some things to look for. First and foremost, make sure you have LOTS of water to give her.  Stop frequent enough for her to drink.  If she doesn't drink, then she's not thirsty.  Dehydration signs: Take the skin on the top of the head and pull it, if it springs back to normal, she's fine, if it sticks, she's dehydrated.  Give water immediately.  Swimming will help some, but if she's exhausted, swimming isn't a good idea, as she could get more tired and drown.  If she is dehydrated and won't drink, try to entice her with some chicken broth.  Ice cubes help too. Good Luck and don't worry too much.  So long as water is available to her, she'll be fine.  If she seems to be slowing down, then let her rest for a while.  As she ages, she will slow a lot.
