Timid 14 week old Golden

We just adopted a 14 week old golden puppy 4 days ago.  Before we selected him we watched him play with his littermates and out on the floor with us .. he was curious, playful and confident in approaching us.  The hour long ride home in the car was wonderful.  Once in our house he seemed spooked by just about everything.  He has made some improvement in the house, but he will not go out the front door without forcing him.  Most of the time he is okay in the backyard, but today when he heard another dog bark/growl 2 doors down he actually tried to run right through the door to go back inside.  I don't want to force him into anything he's not ready for, but we have had goldens before and he is presenting behaviours that I rarely saw in our other dogs.  Please give me some advice on how to make him more confident!  Thanks.
