5-month old German Shepherd puppy throwing up

Question
My 5-month old GS puppy threw up today around 4:30 pm.  He ate dinner at 6:30 pm, and threw up at 8:00pm; everything came up this time, and he finished doing so outside.  He chewed on a granulated rawhide chewstick yesterday.  He also tries to eat out of the cat litter box (yuck I know), and I am able to catch him and stop it.  Could this be the reason for his upset stomach?  He's acting normal otherwise.  I don't want to panic, but it's the weekend and I know getting in touch with a vet will be difficult if he continues to do this tomorrow.  Do you recommend anything until then?

Answer
This is too late to help with that problem, but I do want to say the rawhide is far more likely to be a problem than the litter box.  For the sake of your stomach, you may want to put it where the cat, but not the puppy can get to it.

The pet stores are full of toys that many dogs will quickly chew up into
pieces they could choke on or cause intestinal blockages.  If you are not
there to watch, stick to sturdy stuff such as Nylabones and Kongs.  Keep a
close eye on chew toys and quickly discard anything that is coming apart in
pieces.  Rawhide is especially bad because it swells after being swallowed.
I don't trust any of the consumable chews.  The dogs just gnaw them down to a
dangerous size too quickly.  These problems are the worst with, but not
limited to, large, aggressive chewers such as Labs.
