breeding dachunds

Question
I am wondering if you breed 2 red dachunds will all the puppies be red or will they come out as mixed colors, red black and tan etc...

Answer
It really depends on the genes they carry and unless you are a breeder and know the history of the mother and father, it would be hard to tell.  Many reputable breeders who breed AKC dachshunds do genetic testing to know for sure what genes their breeding dogs carry.  You can get reds and black and tans, but it depends on the genes and you may get all reds.  It is important to also understand the dogs confirmation and history so that breed defects are not passed on.  Even healthy looking dogs can pass on undesirable problems to their offspring.   That is one reason why people really should not breed just to have puppies - it promotes backyard breeding and adds to the overpopulation of unwanted pets (and yes there are many dachshunds in that category!).  It is healthier for both dogs to be spayed and neutered - they will have less health issues as they age.  There is also no guarantee that you will get quality pups or that the mom will be a good one.  Hope that helps!
