Question
My family has decided to get an English Cocker Spaniel in the next few months. We plan to get a red cocker but we have heard of the 'rage syndrome' that exists in solid colored varieties. Is this a problem that happens in EVERY solid colored dog? Or can it be avoided by careful training at an early age? Is this something we should be so worried about?
We have also recently seen some red cockers with very small and faint patches of white on the top of the head in the shape of a star. Is this considered a solid colored Cocker with possibility of rage syndrome?

Answer
Hello Aimee,

Rage Syndrome is something I have NEVER experienced in any of my reds. I've had many reds and not once have any of them been any different from any of the other varieties.

Personally I don't believe it exists. Many breeds of dog show signs which could be described as "rage syndrome". It really isn't something you should worry about.

Careful training is a must for any dog, just make sure you don't break their spirit by being overly strict. You lose the merry cocker spaniel which is what I love about them most.

You will be a very happy owner no matter what colour of cocker spaniel you get. They are wonderful dogs.

Good luck and have fun!
Lynne Clacher.
