Question
QUESTION: Hi-
I have a 6 year old cocker that I got when he was 10months old. He has had uncontrollable issues with vomitting for the past 6 years. I have taken him to a few vets through out the years and no one can tell me what's wrong. He has had blood work and xrays everything came back healthy. He is active and happy but he is constantly dry heaving and throwing up either clear liquid or partially digested dog food. He throws up everyday 2-6 times a day!He does not get table food and I have changed his food countless times. He gets 1/2 cup of food 2x a day, he can eat in the am and 6 to 8 hours later throw up partially digested food. I have been researching, could this MEGAESOPHAGUS be the case? Thank you

ANSWER: How is his weight?

Are you feeding kibble?  Have you tried canned food?  I'd like a list of what you've been feeding him to the best of your recollection.

This isn't megaesophagus.  This is a digestive issue.

Does he always throw up hours after he's eaten?  Never right after?

I can think of a few things I'd like to try but it's best if you first answer my questions.

QUESTION: He weighs about 25 pounds. Yes he eats dry food, right now it is a gluten free food I can't remember the brand off the top of my head. In the past he has been on Halo, wellness, blue buffalo, nature's recipe, kirkland brand, all easy to digest recipes and other brands as well. I have tried him on a raw food diet, didn't work.I have tried can dog food of the same brands listed above and they didn't work.He throws up all the time doesn't matter when, right after he eats, after drinking water, after barking, in the middle of the night dry heaves in his sleep then eventually vomits, if he gets startled out of sleep he will vomit, if he hasn't eaten all day he vomits. I've tried changing when he eats, how much, taking water away for a couple hours, buying a bowl with spacers to control how fast he eats. He is constantly in search of food whether it be counter surfing or garbage picking, he's always hungry. I've tried the doggie anxiety meds from the vet and tums.I don't know what else to do.

Answer
Okay...let's try something very simple and see what happens.

First of all, I'm thinking you're not feeding him enough and you're feeding him too seldom.

What I'd like you to do (just for a couple of days) is to feed him every few hours. Let's see what happens when he has a regular flow of food.  1/4 or 1/3 cup should do it..every 2 to 3 hours and especially a snack at bedtime.

I want to know if he's less in search of food and, of course, if this has any affect on the vomiting.

I don't know what brand you could be using that 1 cup per day could possibly be enough nutrition.

And what raw food did you try?  What med did the vet give you?  He may have a touch of acid reflux but let's see if this helps at all.  We can only go one step at a time.
