our friends chihuahua died giving birth. She had 2 pups and only wanted 1. we have been bottle feeding her since she was 2 days old. when do the ears and eyes open? is there anything we should be doing at this stage to help her out?

Good luck with the new pup..
I have some suggestions for a great feeding program.
So sorry momma passed away!


Purchase some puppy formula and give him 2-4 cc every 2 hours, as tolerated.  YOU can use a bottle or syringe.  In another 3 weeks he should be able to lap up some very wet food in a bowl.

I suggest you buy some Innova Puppy food (found at pet stores).  Place 2 teaspoons of Innova dry into a dish and place 4-5 teaspoons of formula on top - Let this soak for 10 minutes and then feed it to him.  If he doesn't like it you can buy the Innova Canned wet food. He should eat the wet food right up.

As he gets a little older you will do the Innova Dry food and a  1/4 teaspoon of Pure Salmon oil mixed on top of the dry.
This is great for his skin and coat.

Also, at 6-7 weeks you would add NuVET Plus to his diet - this is an Immune system Booster and Protector for your pup.  
Loads of breeders send the pups home with a bottle of NuVET Plus Powder or Wafers ....( You should get the powder)

"Call In" and tell them you want to start on the NuVET powder -
You will need just 1/4 of teaspoon  per day for the first month and then 1/2 teaspoon  per day, long term ....( mix into some cottage cheese or Wet Dog food )

NuVET sells a "SMALL bottle" of powder but you must call in for small sizes - they don't sell the 20.00 bottle over the web site.
