aggressive behavior at vet

Question
You helped answer some questions regarding my Bulldog, Tubby, a couple of days ago. I took your advice and took Tubby to a new vet familiar with bulldogs today. I was very dissapointed. You see, I may have mentioned that Tubby has been somewhat agressive in his last couple of visits to the vet. This time he was incorrigable. There was nothing that could be done that would allow the vet to examine Tubby. He even bit me. My question is this: Do you think he may have been traumatized by this? He is acting very droopy and cautious this evening. Even when I try to console him. He was a bit friendlier before we went to the vet today. Now, I'm kind of afraid to touch him. I almost feel as if he is mad at me for taking him to that vet today. I guess I just want to know what I can do to just get him back to normal. If an office visit with a vet won't work maybe a house call vet? I can deal with that later but right now, I don't want my family being afraid of Tubby because I took him somewhere he didn't want to go. Please help with this. I never thought this dog would ever snap at me but I guess he really was scared today.

Answer
If Tubby is sick, then he will naturally defend himself.  As far as being traumatized... that I am not sure of.  Unfortunately, if a vet is unable to help, then I certainly will not be of any use.  The vet should know how to deal with an aggressive dog (ie. muzzle or the dreaded sedation).

In the end, Tubby is acting on instinct right now.  Have you ever heard the phrase "never corner a sick animal"?  That is probably how he feels right now.

Thanks,
Stephen
