My boxer poops!

Question
I have a one year old fixed female boxer.  Recently we switched her food from puppy to adult. She was on puppy chow and is now eating Eukanueba Boxer formula.  About a week a go she started pooping up to 6 times a day.  Is this normal?  She has been on the new brand of food for at least one month.  Should I change brands again?

Answer
Hi Theresa,

My Boxers poop, too!  lol!

Don't get sucked into the breed specific hype.  There is nothing about Eukanueba Boxer or Royal Canin Boxer that make it a better food for a Boxer.  If you read the bag carefully it's also the 'perfect' food for several other breeds.  ;)  Gimmicks like this are strictly for the consumer...so YOU can feel good about what your dog is eating.  They don't care about shapes or colors or a pretty bag!

If you want to stay in the same budget range, Purina One is really good.  I'm having great success on it with all of my dogs.

If you want to go for a higher quality food, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul dog food is good as are Canidae, Wellness and Solid Gold.

To answer your question...no, pooping that frequently is not good but is normal if she's not doing well on the food.  Crap goes in, crap comes out so-to-speak.  What's digested stays in...if that much is coming out, how much is keeping with her?  :)

If you do decide to switch again, do it gradually.  75 old/25 new for a week, then 50/50, then 25/75 and in week 4 you'll be at 100 of the new food.  This helps reduce the risk of bloat as well as any stomach upsets from a new food.

Good luck!
