Question
We have a 15 month old White Boxer dog that cannot calm down.  He is destructive and tears everything up, even when we are home.  Is it safe to use any of these herbal remedies, that are advertised, to help him relax?

Answer
Hi Rosemarie,
For the most part herbal remedies are not harmful.  However, they do not always work and in some cases the dog may become reliant on them and resort back to his old behavior upon removal.

My first question would be to ask if he is neutered?  If not, then i strongly suggest this is done, not only for the health of the dog but it will also help to reduce his wild temperament.  The number one reason a dog is destructive is because he is just plain bored.  Dogs, especially boxers have tremendous amounts of energy and need a good 1-2 hours of exercise a day.  Even letting a dog run around the backyard is not as helpful as a good 30 or 45 minute walk.  How often do you walk your boxer?  Walking your dog is one of the best ways to prevent behavior problems. At least two walks daily help prevent elimination problems, destructiveness, separation anxiety and other common behavior disorders.

A walk allows you to practice obedience skills with your dog to increase the reliability of training. Reviewing the basic commands also increases the benefits of a walk because your dog is not simply ambling along, but is performing additional tasks. Taking your dog for a walk provides mental stimulation through territorial investigation.

A 15 month old boxer is still a pup.  Whereas some other breeds tend to come down with age, boxers can be energetic and playful into their golden years, it's one of their great attributes.  However, as I'm sure you are seeing they can be a stubborn breed and a simple "no" or "bad dog" does not always work.  Spend available time training him in and outside of the house to divert his attention from his destructive behaviors.  A well behaved boxer is a trained dog and a great asset to any family.  Good luck with your dog and if you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.
