Question
Hi Angela,
I have a 5yr old male boxer who recently tested positive for hookworm. He has gotten the 2 rounds of Strongid. Last dose was 3 weeks ago. I know i need to retest but his poop hasn't gone back to normal yet. Still somewhat pudding like.(I'm hoping he didn't reinfect himself). His heartworm was/is suppose to kill adult hookworm!!????? With that being said, I have noticed that his breath has gotten really bad lately. Almost garbage smelling. I was wondering if that could have anything to do w/ the parasites. He also has allergies which he sees a holistic vet for.

Answer
Hi Maureen,

The heartworm medicine will not kill the hookworms unless it also contains pyrantel. It is not uncommon for a dog to need multiple treatments to rid hookworms. Now would be a good time to re-check him for the parasite.

The most common cause of bad breath (halitosis) in dogs is from eating something like garbage, oral/dental diseases and gastrointestinal problems. There are other underlying medical issues which are more serious that cause halitosis. Medicines can cause it as well. It is best to have the vet check him out again and mention the bad breath so a diagnosis can be made. Thank you for your questions.
