Dog mourning

Question
We had to put our Brittany Spaniel down and now our Beagle, Barney, seems lost.  He isn't eating and just had two bouts of colitis. What can I do to help him through this?  Should I get another dog?
Thanks for your help.

Answer
Hi and thanks for writing to me. I am so sorry to hear about your other dog. I know you must feel lost as well. Dogs like people do go through a grieving period. You did not mention how long it has been but I would venture that a week or two would be pretty normal. If he is not eating ANYTHING or drinking then you have a big problem, he will get dehydrated very quickly and if he also has the runs it is very dangerous if he is not taking in at least water. If that behavior continues for more than a day or two he needs immediate vet care. If he is drinking and only eating a small amount he is OK and will get past it when he is ready. You might want to offer him something unusually tempting right now.

Another dog is a good idea but not just yet. Give him time to adjust to the other one being gone before he has to adjust to a new one. I can't tell you how long to wait, you will have to use your judgement. It may end up that he settles in as a loner just fine however, beagles being the pack animals that they are will probably need another companion.

Hope this helps!
